SM SUPERMALLS’ SOLAR ROOFTOP PROJECT

- STEVEN TAN Steven Tan is the COO of SM Supermalls, handling mall properties in the Philippines and China.

With over 72 malls in the Philippines and seven malls in China, SM Supermalls’ business impacts the environment and society in a significant way. Therefore, it is our responsibility to operate sustainably, and commit to programs that leave favorable footprints on the lifestyle communities we adopt.

One such thrust is promoting renewable energy for our operations by way of the Solar Rooftop Project. In 2014, SM City North EDSA became the first mall in the country to be solar-powered. This was followed by SM Mall of Asia with twice the capacity. To date, we have over 10 malls with solar panels in their rooftops. These include provincial malls SM City Cauayan, SM City Cabanatuan, SM City Iloilo, SM Tuguegarao and SM City Trece Martires), as well as malls in China (SM City Xiamen, SM Lifestyle Center and SM City Jinjiang).

TO MAKE IT MORE TANGIBLE TO READERS, THE SM SOLAR PANELS CAPACITY OF 9,245 MEGAWATTS IS ENOUGH TO POWER:

● 83,205 refrigerators running 24 hours/day ● 838,000 microwave ovens running 1 hour/day ● 116,902 65-watt laptops running 4 hours/day ● 379,932 10-watt bulb running 8 hours/day ● 1.5 million fully charged mobile phones ● 126,644 30-watt electric fans running 8 hours/day Definitely, we continue to expand the reach of our Solar Rooftop Project. SM Prime Holdings — of which SM Supermalls is one of the business units — fully supports and adheres to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, a collection of 17 goals that address global challenges related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.

As a company, we keep a solid eye on sustainability, investing in various innovations and green practices that we implement in our mall operations. Environmental Stewardship is one of our key lookouts as we advance our sustainability goals.

SM’s vision is to build and manage innovative integrated property developments that are catalysts for a better quality of life. This ensures that everything we do safeguards a healthy environment for future generations.
