Rody to inaugurate school in China for ‘Nanay Soling’

- By EDITH REGALADO

President Duterte does not hide the strong ties he had with his late mother, Soledad, also known as “Nanay Soling,” who was an educator.

That is why the President said he will be visiting Fujian in China to inaugurate the school building that was built by the University of Fujian in honor of his mother, who died in 2012.

“It would be something somewhere. I’m proceeding to Fujian because – University Fujian, they built a building in honor of my mother,” Duterte said during the oath taking of the Federation of FilipinoChinese Chambers of Commerce of Industry in Malacañang the other day.

The President said the building, named after his mother, is for foreign students who wish to study in China.

Duterte is slated to travel to China at the end of the month to hold bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and cheer for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Foshan City.

He recalled how his mother was a respected teacher in the 1950s. Soledad then became a civic leader in the city involved in various advocacies, including proper farming methods in her model farm south of the city. “Tanungin mo ’yang tagaDavao. ’Yung mga taga-Davao dito, ’yun oh, ’yan. Teacher

man nila ang nanay ko 1951 (Ask those from Davao. My mother was their teacher in 1951). When that school was organized, one of the few pioneering teachers nanay ko (was my mother),” the President added.

Duterte visited and cried before the tombs of his mother and father, the late Davao governor Vicente Duterte, when he won the presidential elections in May 2016.
