1st Filipino-made ro-ro vessel unveiled
Domestic shipping operator Shogun Ships Co. Inc. (SSCI) unveils the MV Isla Simara, the first RoPax vessel built and designed in the Philippines by Filipino shipbuilders, today at the North Harbor, Manila.
It is set to ply the MatnogAllen route starting Aug. 17.
SSCI chairman Vicente Cordero Jr. who grew up in the family’s business, developed his fascination with boats when his family stayed in Canada. His interest grew upon seeing the uncomfortable travel conditions of Filipinos riding ro-ro.
“The people and the passengers are treated like cargos,” he recalled.
So in 2016, Cordero led the conceptualization of MV Isla Simara. He also named the vessel, and three other upcoming water vehicles, after undiscovered islands in the Philippines to promote tourism, spur countryside development, and enhance inter-island connectivity.
It holds 92 luxurious reclining chairs for its VIP class, 144 durable reclining chairs for business class, and 226 comfortable high-back chairs with spacious legroom for the economy class.
The first Filipino-made roro is also custom-built for the existing ports in the country.
According to SSCI, it is also the first smart vessel built in the Philippines, equipped with modern automation and control system. This serves as the brain and nerve sensors that control and monitor all the operating systems of the entire vessel.
It features a 12-meter-long vehicle ramp, which supports the efficient loading and unloading of vehicles. It houses a clinic with a diaper changing area and breastfeeding station as well as a spacious restaurant and dining area.
It is equipped with life rafts, life jackets, and reliable Marine Evacuation System.
SSCI added that the vessel is compliant to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and MARINA Class 2 Category Service standards for ro-ro.
