Sandigan OKs probation for ex-vice gov, husband

- By ELIZABETH MARCELO

The Sandiganbayan has allowed former Sulu vice governor Nur-Ana Sahidulla and her husband, former mayor Abdulwahid Omar Sahidulla of Banguingui town, to complete a probationary program instead of serving time in prison for their failure to declare some properties in their joint statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.

In a four-page resolution promulgated on Aug. 30, the anti-graft court granted an application for probation filed by the Sahidullas, who were found guilty in February of violating Republic Act 6713 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees, and perjury as provided under the Revised Penal Code.

The court said the threemonth probation was approved by Quezon City Probation and Parole Office chief Reynaldo de Guia based on recommendations of Parole Officer II Mabel dela Paz.

The Sahidullas were originally directed to pay a fine of P5,000 each for the breach of conduct offense and sentenced to two months to one year in prison for the perjury case.

The anti-graft court directed the Sahidullas to report to the QC Probation and Parole Office twice a month. It said they should not change residence without prior approval of the parole office.

The anti-graft court said the respondents should also allow the supervising probation and parole officer or an authorized probation aide to regularly visit them at their residence and workplaces.

If the Sahidullas fail to observe the conditions or are found to have committed any material misrepresentation in their applications for probation, the court will revoke the probation order and compel them to serve the sentence it originally imposed.
