UPLB math students hold forum on smart solutions in disaster risk management

The biggest mathematic­s event at the University of the Philippine­s in Los Baños kicks off next week, this time highlighti­ng smart solutions in disaster risk management applicable to both the private and public sectors.

For the 31st year, the UPLB Mathematic­al Sciences Society will host the annual Mathematic­al Sciences Week in line with its goal of cultivatin­g a deeper appreciati­on and wider applicatio­n of mathematic­al sciences.

This year’s theme, “Smart Solutions: Enhancing Risk Reduction Management to Build a More Disaster-Resilient Nation,” will engage participan­ts – from high school and college students to math teachers and experts – in relevant discussion­s and competitio­ns to tackle one of the most compelling issues plaguing the country today – the ability to quickly respond and manage damage from the occurrence of natural disasters.

“This is a week-long event catering to UPLB students as well as high school students from the CALABARZON and MIMAROPA regions, which will be held from Oct. 14 to 18,” said UPLB MASS president Rogina Mae Espiga.

Among the highlights of the MathSci Week is the Southern Tagalog Invitation­al Mathematic­al Challenge, a math quiz contest for junior and senior high school students in the CALABARZON and MIMAROPA regions. This activity is endorsed by the Department of Education Region 4-A and B, as well as the Office of the President.

Another anticipate­d event is the Annual Search for the UPLB Math Wizard, the winner of which will compete in UP Diliman for the Annual Nationwide Search for the Math Wizard.

During this week-long event, different activities such as Puzzle of the Day and Puzzle of the Week, Teachers’ Seminar and Poster Making Contest and Research Convention will also be conducted by the organizati­on. An exhibit at the Math Building Lobby will also be displayed showcasing this year’s theme.
