Handcrafting Masterpieces with Love
In her speech, beauty queen Margie Moran-Floirendo, currently the chairperson of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, demonstrated that women are not only muses, but powerful creators as well. She presented the Filipino female pioneers in arts and culture — but lamented that until now, no Filipina has been awarded the title, National Artist in Visual Arts.
Aside from Floirendo, the sit-down panel included big names in the industry, namely, Ballet Manila artistic director Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, Belo Group CEO and medical director Dr. Vicki Belo, Dentsu chairmom and CCO Merlee Jayme Syfu and eventologist Tim Yap.

In my travels, I make it a point to visit a museum or a performing arts center. Museums serve as a vessel of humanity, preserving the tangible evidence of humankind in the environment. The performing arts center, meanwhile, are more than entertainment host. They interpret a society’s cultural consciousness and bring awareness to its national identity. I’m really amazed at their vast collections of artifacts, artworks and other objects that have historical, socio-political and cultural artistic importance. But walking through the exhibits, I’ve noticed that most, if not all, artworks on display are made by men. In some museums, there were just some works by women on exhibit. And it got me thinking: Why are women misrepresented and often ignored in the art scene — both women in art and art by women? — MARGIE MORAN-FLOIRENDO ” chairperson, Cultural Center of the Philippines
