7 dead, 22 hurt in Pampanga smashup

Seven persons died and 22 others were injured in a road accident involving three vehicles in Lubao, Pampanga on Wednesday.

Police identified the fatalities as Marie Grace David, Rowel Flores, John Raven Astrero, Mary Grace Castro, Linette Valite, Alex Nilayad, 9, and Princess Quinto, 6. They were pronounced dead on arrival in a hospital.

Quoting a police report, Col. Jean Fajardo, Pampanga police director, said the victims, all passengers of a jeepney, were on their way to San Fernando City when the vehicle was hit by a Nissan pickup while crossing Jose Abad Santos Avenue in Barangay San Agustin at around 6 p.m.

When the jeepney swerved in the opposite lane due to the impact of the crash, it was hit by an Isuzu dropside truck.

The drivers of the jeepney and the truck were among the injured who remain confined in various hospitals.

The driver of the pickup, Alexander Domingo, 68, was arrested. He was charged yesterday with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, physical injuries and damage to properties.

Quezon road mishap

Meanwhile, in Quezon, three members of a family died and four of their relatives were injured when a bus collided with a tricycle along Maharlika Highway in Barangay Bukal Sur in Candelaria town, also on Wednesday.

Cpl. Czesar Caliwara, officer-on-case, said tricycle driver Wilson, 29, and his passengers Cristito, 60, and Althea, 5, all surnamed Garma, died at the scene.

The injured – Corazon, 53; Florylane, 31; Ashley, 10, and Jhon Wine, 4, also surnamed Garma, remained confined at the Peter Paul Medical Center.

The bus driver, Dario Aliocod, 57, was apprehende­d.

In Isabela, Poldo Elcano died when his motorcycle fell into an irrigation canal in Barangay Lapaz, Cabatuan.

In Barangay Centro, also in Cabatuan, Leonard Vea, 25; his wife Madonna, 21, and children Cleen Jasem, 5, and John Jacob, 2, were injured when their car rammed a tree.

Police said both Elcano and Vea were drunk when the accident occurred.

In Surigao del Norte, Victoriano Nasayao, 46, and his two passengers who have yet to be identified died when one of the tires of their tricycle burst and collided with a bus along the highway in Barangay San Pedro in Sison town on Tuesday.
