• 27 more inmates get COVID
Twenty-seven more inmates of the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong have tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019, bringing to 47 the number of prisoners infected with COVID-19.
According to the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), the 27 were among the 51 inmates tested for the virus on April 21.
The BuCor said the inmates infected with the virus were transferred to Site Harry, a quarantine facility at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.
The inmates have not shown symptoms of the virus.
“They are being monitored by the doctors of the NBP infirmary. They are asymptomatic,” the bureau said.
A medical staff of the CIW has also tested positive for COVID-19.
Around 3,422 inmates are being held at the overcrowded women’s prison.
A Bilibid inmate died of the disease at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine on Thursday.
Parañaque clinic raided
In Parañaque, authorities raided a clinic allegedly selling medicine for COVID-19 to Chinese patrons on Saturday.
Members of the city health department and business permit and licensing office (BPLO) stormed the clinic at the corner of Lt. Garcia street and Airport Road in Barangay Baclaran.
Liang Yumei, 44, alias Liza Wu, owner of the clinic, was arrested along with her aide,
Hinya Rodriguez.
Seized during the operation were boxes of Chineselabeled medicine allegedly sold at P100,000 per box.
Rapid test kits
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has received 500 rapid test kits from the Chinese government.
BI Associate Commissisoner Aldwin Alegre said immigration employees who are exposed to probable COVID-19 carriers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport would benefit from the test kits.
Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente thanked the Chinese embassy for the donation.
According to BI port operations chief Grifton Medina, more than 400 immigration officers are performing frontline duties at the NAIA.
OFW hangs self
A female overseas Filipino worker who recently arrived from Kuwait was found dead on Sunday in a hotel in Pasay that served as a halfway house for repatriated OFWs.
The Filipina reportedly hanged herself.
Police said the fatality suffered from depression after she was sent home by her employer amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
