Magnitude 5.8 quake jolts Mindanao

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake rocked parts of northern and eastern Mindanao yesterday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanolog­y and Seismology (Phivolcs) said no damage or injury was reported from the quake, but warned the public on aftershock­s.

Phivolcs said the temblor occurred at around 1:32 a.m., with its epicenter traced some 21 kilometers southeast of Bayabas, Surigao del Sur.

The quake was felt as Intensity 4, which is classified as moderately strong, in

Bayabas, Bislig City, Cagwait, Hinatuan and Tandag City in Surigao del Sur and Butuan City in Agusan del Norte.

It was felt at Intensity 3 in Surigao City as well as in Gingoog City, Magsaysay and Medina in Misamis Oriental and Intensity 2 in Balingasag, Jasaan, Salay, Tagoloan, and Villanueva in Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro City.

Phivolcs said the quake, which had a depth of 40 kilometers, was tectonic in origin.
