DILG calls out Metro mayors

For overcrowded shopping malls

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has called out mayors in Metro Manila for the overcrowding in malls amid quarantine protocols to contain the spread of COVID-19.

DILG Undersecretary for external and legislative affairs Ricojudge Janier Echiverri said he has observed that some malls in the metropolis were overcrowded, just like before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Napakarami pa rin ng tao, parang walang pandemic. That’s why we have to call the attention of the mayors, especially in highly urbanized areas to monitor shopping malls,” Echiverri said in an interview with “The Chiefs” on Cignal TV’s One News/TV5 on Tuesday night.

Echiverri said he also noticed that some dine-in restaurants were packed with customers and social distancing measures were no longer observed.

He reminded local chief executives that they are the ones responsible in ensuring that health and safety protocols in malls and other commercial establishments are strictly followed.

Echiverri said the national government’s policy remains the same as Metro Manila is still under general community quarantine until Dec. 31.

“Everyone must strictly adhere to quarantine guidelines to prevent the transmission of the virus,” he said.

People should also do away with Christmas traditions such as parties and street carolings, according to Echiverri.

“It’s very clear on our end na talagang ipinagbabawal ang mass gatherings,” he said.
