The Department of National Defense (DND) signed an agreement with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) yesterday allowing the use of five of its properties in Metro Manila as subway stations and terminal exchanges.

The right- of- way usufruct agreement was signed by DND Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade.

Under the partnership, five DND properties will be used for the development of access points to the ongoing Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) and terminal exchange plazas.

This covers the properties of Veterans Memorial Medical Center, V. Luna Hospital, Camp Aguinaldo, the Philippine Army lot in Manila and the Villamor Air Base.

Three of the 17 subway stations will be located near or in the DND properties.

Lorenzana said the Armed Forces of the Philippines will also directly benefit from the project, which would “earn revenue we can use for modernization” of the AFP.

The MMSP will be the first underground railway system in the country to serve the central zone of the National Capital Region.
