Go calls for intensified fire protection drive

-

Sen. Bong Go has personally extended aid to 294 families or 1,119 individuals affected by a fire that razed houses in

Barangay Alabang in Muntinlupa City last Jan 17.

During an activity at the Pedro E. Diaz High School last Wednesday, the senator and his staff distributed meals, food packs and financial assistance to affected families. They also provided vitamins, masks and face shields to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Selected beneficiaries from the indigent category were given new shoes. Others received bicycles so they can travel with ease amid limited public transportation. Meanwhile, selected recipients with children studying under the blended learning setup were provided with tablets.

A similar activity was carried out in Barangay Alabang last Dec. 15 for 386 victims of a separate fire incident. On the same day, he also provided aid to fire victims in Taytay, Rizal. All activities were conducted in strict compliance with the government-issued health and safety protocols against COVID-19.

As chair of the Senate committee on health, Go offered to assist any beneficiary in need of medical treatments or services. He informed everyone that they may also seek aid from the government through the nearest Malasakit Center located at the Ospital ng Parañaque.

Given the frequency of fire incidents in the country, Go reiterated his call for the passage of Senate Bill 1832, otherwise known as the Bureau of Fire Protection Modernization Act of 2020.

The bill, which he authored, mandates the BFP to conduct monthly fire prevention campaigns and information drives in partnership with the Department of the Interior and Local Government and local government units. It also provides the BFP with adequate funding for acquiring modern equipment, hiring new personnel, and providing specialized training.
