Wider Makati-Mandaluyong bridge 78.5% complete – Villar

- – Jose Rodel Clapano

The Department of Public Works and Highways is on track for the 2021 opening of the Estrella-Pantaleon bridge connecting Estrella street in Makati City and Barangka Drive in Mandaluyong, DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said yesterday.

The expansion of the bridge, also known as the Rockwell bridge, into a two-way, four-lane structure is expected to greatly improve vehicular movement between the two highly urbanized cities of Metro Manila.

“Construction of new Estrella-Pantaleon bridge is now at 78.5 percent completion and once fully completed will be able to accommodate around 50,000 vehicles per day,” Villar said.

The Estrella-Pantaleon bridge project is part of the Metro Manila Logistics Improvement Program to ease heavy traffic along EDSA.

DPWH Undersecretary for unified project management office operations Emil Sadain said the project involves the replacement of the old steel truss bridge with a pre-stressed concrete rigid frame bridge (with V-shape piers) having a four-lane concrete deck slab of 506.46 lineal meters.

“The project is one of the two grant bridges from China, with the other bridge known as the Binondo-Intramuros bridge project connecting the historic Walled City of Intramuros and Manila’s commerce and trade district of Binondo,” Sadain said.
