- Emmanuel Tupas

Another police officer has died of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported yesterday.

The policeman was assigned in Carmen, Davao del Norte and died on Jan. 25 from chronic kidney failure due to complications of COVID-19, PNP deputy chief for administration Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said.

The police officer is among the 33 new cases documented by the PNP yesterday. Thirty are from the provinces while two are from various administrative and operational support units of the PNP.

Twenty-nine police officers have died due to COVID-19 since last year.

At least 10,219 PNP personnel have contracted the virus.

A total of 9,576 or 93.7 percent of the patients have recovered while 614 or six percent are still recuperating in hospitals and quarantine facilities.

Eleazar said they expect the numbers to keep increasing as police officers are among the government’s frontliners in the campaign to curb the spread of COVID-19.

“There is nothing to worry about as we have measures in place,” he said.
