Globe explores new submarine cable systems

- By RICHMOND MERCURIO

Globe Telecom Inc. is exploring potential partnerships for new cable systems to expand its international network capacity.

Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu said discussions are ongoing for submarine cable systems that are being planned globally.

“We are regularly in constant talks with all of these cable systems being planned globally. They all have different routes, they all have different facets, and we have to find the right one that suites us,” Cu said.

“We’ve been in business for many, many years and once we hit certain thresholds in terms of capacity usage, we trigger an investment to these cable systems,” he said.

Cu said announcements would be made at the appropriate time once agreements with other parties have been signed.

“As you know, these cable systems take many years to build so we engage them probably about two to three years prior, make the investments on a progressive basis, and then land a cable in the Philippines,” the Globe executive said.

At present, Cu said Globe remains in a good position to address the growing use of internet services with the $250-million Southeast Asia-United States (SEA-US) submarine cable system.

The submarine cable project undertaken by Globe and other companies part of the SEA-US consortium, which was launched in 2017, provides direct links between Davao and the US for richer and enhanced international connectivity.

Globe serves the telecommunications and technology needs of consumers and businesses across an entire suite of products and services, including mobile, fixed, broadband, data connectivity, internet and managed services.
