Go ‘hopes for the best’ after Sara’s withdrawal

- By CECILLE SUERTE FELIPE

As a loyal ally of the Dutertes, Sen. Bong Go said that he is “still hoping for the best” amid speculations that Davao City Mayor Sara DuterteCarpio’s withdrawal of her candidacy for reelection may pit them against each other in the race for vice president.

Go said he does not want to speculate on the plans of the Duterte family as DuterteCarpio seemed set on seeking higher office, probably the vice presidency.

“Let’s just wait and see what President Duterte’s decision and the party’s decision will be. I don’t want to speculate on what the (Duterte) family’s plan is,” Go said in an ambush interview after he delivered aid to residents in Antipolo City last Tuesday.

“I have a political party with President Duterte. It was his decision and the party’s decision that I run for vice president,” Go added about his being fielded by a faction of the PDP-Laban.

The senator advised the public to wait and see what might happen in the next days, but distanced himself from any impending decision by the party or by Duterte, saying that he would be “the least of their concerns.”

“First of all, I love President Duterte very much. I am indebted to him; and the indebtedness carries weight for us Visayans. That’s something I learned from him, and I don’t want to give him a heavy heart over politics,” said Go.

Duterte-Carpio revealed on Tuesday that she has officially dropped her reelection bid for Davao City mayor and nominated Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte, her younger brother, as her replacement candidate.

Meanwhile, Go admitted he was touched by the public’s outpouring of support and the speeches delivered by

Antipolo City Mayor Andrea Ynares and former governor Casimiro Ynares, who believed in his qualification to be vice president.

“You know, I got emotional because earlier I saw people holding placards that signified their appreciation. I told them they did not have to thank us, because we’re just doing our job,” he said.
