Defending champion Ateneo soared to its 30th consecutive victory since 2018 by clipping fierce rival La Salle, 74-57, in the battle of undefeated squads in the UAAP Season 84 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City last night.

The three-time reigning titlist in the process claimed the solo lead with a perfect 4-0 card halfway through the first round of the UAAP tourney being staged under a bubble setup amid the pandemic.

Ange Kouame flaunted his might with 16 points and 19 rebounds, Dave Ildefonso canned in 12 markers while Gian Mamuyac had 11 plus six rebounds and six steals as Ateneo stretched its rampage since last losing in October 2018 to bolster its four-peat UAAP quest.

“It’s a tough game. It’s a game where it was never comfortable until the very end. We just kept squeezing and squeezing. It’s a great Ateneo-La Salle game. We came out on top and now we look forward to NU. It does not get any easier,” said coach Tab Baldwin as the two rivals played without fans for the first time.

Ateneo came into the game carrying victories over UP, FEU and Adamson. La Salle absorbed its first defeat in four starts.

Streaking University of the Philippines notched its third win in a row, steamrolling the listless University of the East, 81-66.

Slowly but surely gaining their bearings after succumbing to title holder Ateneo in last week’s opener, the Fighting Maroons waxed hot early with a 31-14 blitz and never looked back to gain a share of second with La Salle at 3-1.

Rookie Zav Lucero continued to impress for the Diliman-based squad with 14 points and six boards with the help of seasoned guard Ricci Rivero, who scored a similar output on three treys plus three assists and three steals.

Earlier, National U relied on a scattered attack to spoil super rookie RJ Abarrientos’ career outing of 33 points for Far Eastern U in a close 73-68 victory.

John Lloyd Clemente (18), Michael Malonzo (14) and Shaun Ildefonso (13) showed the way as the Bulldogs got back on track for a 2-2 record.

The Tamaraws stumbled to their third straight defeat.

In the day’s third match, Santo Tomas roared to its second straight win at the expense of skidding Adamson, 79-72. The Falcons fell to 1-3.
