Town & Country (Philippines) - - OUT & ABOUT -

Following a successful run in Singapore, the Australasian touring production of Sister Act makes its highly awaited stop in Manila. Presented by Ovation Productions, it opens later this month at the Solaire Resort & Casino. Based on the hit 1992 comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg, the musical has been updated with significant changes in the plot and all-new music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater for the stage version. Fans of the film will have little to worry about, however, as the musical retains the infectious, feel-good vibe while making an even bigger spectacle out of the song and dance numbers. It made its West End debut in 2010—with Goldberg appearing as the Mother Superior this time for select shows—and then opened on Broadway the year after. In the musical, Deloris Van Cartier is a wisecracking lounge singer who goes on the lam after witnessing a murder by the mob. Forced to go into hiding, she enters a convent where she is coldly treated by the strict mother superior. Deloris, however, makes the most of the situation and whips the convent’s pathetic choir into shape; when the singing nuns later garner national attention, Deloris’ cover is blown. As the goons close in, will her prayers be answered? Miracles do happen. June 27 to July 9, the Theatre at Solaire, 1 Aseana Avenue, Parañaque; tickets available through TicketWorld, 891.9999, ticketworld.com.ph; solaireresort.com.
