BY THE BOOK

Town & Country (Philippines) - - EDITOR’S LETTER -

There was this book that Mom planned to donate to a library with some of her other old books. A battered, dog-eared picture book with crayon markings from its original owner. NO! She had found my first edition The Cat in the

Hat by Dr. Seuss circa 1957 that I had bought from the antiquarian section of Shakespeare and Company in Paris almost six decades later. My big purchase of that trip.

Mom had taken it out of its thick cardboard box that she was going to give to the help for their personal keepsakes. NO! Books are my guilty pleasure, I must admit. Books, books, books everywhere. Shelves and shelves. Piles and piles. I haven’t read more than half of them and I probably never will, but it doesn’t matter.

When I moved home from New York seven years ago, 15 of my 35 balikbayan boxes were filled with books. Deadweight. I’m quite sure the freight company has my name on some sort of watch list.

I love going to bookshops and browsing for hours. Admiring the cover art, smelling the ink, feeling the thickness of the pages. I especially love children’s books, which I’ve been buying for years, just to put on my shelves. Welcome to our Luxury and Guilty Pleasures issue. On our

Down Town & Country cover, some of the next generation of the Who’s Who of the Manila jet-set, young people who hope to make a mark of their own helping move our country forward. It’s also our tenth anniversary issue for Town & Country

Philippines, and our magazine is at its strongest ever. Our website, townandcountry.ph, is all of 10 months old and is already rock solid with over 1.5 million page views a month.

Thank you to everyone who has been there with us all throughout our journey. Our advertisers who have been unwavering in their support in spite of the turbulence in our industry. Our colleagues in the different departments and our management at Summit Media for their faith in us from Day One. And most of all, thank you, our fabulous readers, old and new, who have been right by our side, growing with us, cheering us on, being there with us as we celebrate life at its best. It’s been a pleasure.
