“It was a wild and un­tamed land­scape, with glaciers and the el­e­ments shap­ing the lands into brood­ing and mar­velous vis­tas. The fact that the weather could change at a snap of a fin­ger added an un­pre­dictabil­ity that both ex­cited and un­set­tled me,” Mal­var says of Chile’s Tor­res del Paine, which he tra­verses in Mal­var is a pro­ducer and di­rec­tor at Ex­tra Mile Pro­duc­tions, a film out­fit he co-founded with his wife Ging­gay Hon­tiveros. Among their crew’s cur­rent projects is the #KnowYourNorth ad­vo­cacy, a se­ries of nar­ra­tives about the cul­ture, her­itage, and peo­ple of north­ern Lu­zon. Their film on Ty­phoon Yolanda sur­vivors, Fields of Hope, was awarded Best In­ter­na­tional Doc­u­men­tary at the Man­hat­tan Film Fes­ti­val in 2016.
