- By Dominique Gabriel G. Bañaga

A 33-year-old man was killed late Wednesday night after reportedly running amok and attempting to take a police officer’s firearm in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.

Police identified the fatality as Samuel Palencia, a resident of the said city.

Victorias City deputy police chief, Police Senior Inspector Joy Ellaga, said they received a report claiming Palencia was acting in a frantic manner while wielding a large knife.

Police immediately responded and tried persuading Palencia to calm down and drop the knife. However, Palencia allegedly charged at Police Officer 1 Christian Palmares, who managed to block the attack using his M16 assault rifle.

The officer continued trying to calm the suspect down but Palencia continued the assault and eventually forced the cop down, taking his M16 assault rifle.

The suspect then shot one round, forcing two other cops, Police Officer 2 Louie Jay Loraez and Police Officer 3 Ronilo Maru to open fire, killing Palencia on the spot.

No one else was wounded in the incident. In a separate interview with the suspect’s wife, Marilyn Jasmine, she said, a week before the incident, she began noticing a change in her husband’s behavior as he was unable to sleep and threatened to kill her.

It was also revealed, Palencia had an arrest warrant for a murder charge filed before the Silay City court in 2011.
