Political morons

- By Jun Ledesma

Ioften wondered why and what have we done as a nation that we are given this scourge – a House of Representatives where political morons and hungry hyenas thrive and fight over our taxes and cannot agree on how much to allocate for what and for whom without thinking in single and possessive pronoun: mine.

Then we have Vice President Leni Robredo, who thinks that money intended for dredging heavily-silted rivers, which could result in flash flooding and erosion, like what happened in Bicol (where she resides), will just be purloined. Every time she opens her mouth, she reveals what’s in her cranium.

Another variety, Albay first district Rep. Edcel Lagman, also from her region, asserted, “Martial Law in Mindanao need not be extended since there is no armed rebellion in the region.” How could he (who has not even ventured to Mindanao as he may be too scared) judge what is good for us, Mindanaons? Another Bicolano, Majority Floor leader, Camarines Sur 1st district Rep. Rolando Andaya, practically sat on the proposed 2019 budget, questioning at length the alleged “insertion” by Department of Budget and Management Secretary Benjamin Diokno and jeopardizing the initial phase of President Rodrigo Duterte’s “Build Build Build” program.

Senator Antonio Trillanes, also from the same region, is out of the country for a string of speaking engagements (or so he claims). While trying to impress the populace by attempting to mimic the mold of Dale Carnegie and speak at international forums, he faces numerous warrants back home and should appear before Philippine Courts to answer to the criminal charges leveled against him.

He recently visited Amsterdam , the London the next day, where BBC anchor Stephen Sackur once dubbed him as “out of tune.”

Does ash fall and sulfuric fumes from the Mayon Volcano have anything to do with mindset of these characters?

The unusual delay in passing the 2019 budget is no longer funny. If “insertions” were made, then why are they unable to evaluate the validity of the reasons?

When Davao del Norte first district Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez was Speaker of the House, several congressional districts were deprived of budgetary allocations. Early on, Andaya saw huge chunks of money for districts represented by Alvarez; Ilocos Norte first district Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas; and former Davao City first district Rep. Karlo Nograles, who was appointed Cabinet Secretary last November.

The problem was Malacañang Palace earlier questioned what appeared to be a big allocation for Pampanga’s second congressional district, which is represented by Speaker of the House Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. It turned out to be loose change compared to the three. Everything has since become convoluted as the House of Representatives appears to be paralyzed by its inability to decide the fate of the 2019 budget.

Congress should flesh out the alleged questionable insertions and proceed with what is determined as fair and just.

They even invited Diokno to the budget hearing but instead of seeking answers, congressmen crucified him and drowned the cabinet official in a hail of insults.

Failing to act on the budget will result in a standstill of government functions, services, and the distribution of state employee salaries and wages. The grave condition might force Duterte to consider options that legislators may later regret.
