The province of Negros Oriental on Monday reported a surge in the number of coronavirus disease 2019, or Covid-19, cases, with 18 new patients and one death.

Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion, the health committee chair of the province’s InterAgency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATFEID), reported six new cases along with 12 others with one mortality on Sunday, Oct. 18.

Estacion said the total Covid-19 positive cases for Negros Oriental has reached 223, with 186 recoveries, 31 active cases, and six deaths.

She said in a press briefing that the six new cases are a 21-year-old-female from Bayawan City with no history of travel but admitted to the city hospital due to on and off fever with dry cough; an 83-year-old male from Sta. Catalina who was also diagnosed with dengue and is admitted at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital (NOPH); a 33-year-old-male from Zamboanguita who lives in the compound with five other Covid-19 positive cases previously reported; a 77-year-old-male from Guihulngan City who is a person deprived of liberty; and a 22-year-old-male and 29-year-old-female from Dumaguete City, both tagged as direct contacts of NegOr CoV patient 195.

The latest death is a 69-year-old-male from Guihulngan City who was swabbed post-mortem on Oct. 15 after he was declared dead on arrival at the hospital but the result came three days later, she said.

On Sunday, Estacion said the other new cases reported were two from Tanjay City, one each from Bayawan City and Guihulngan City, three from Dumaguete, and five from Zamboanguita.

Many of these cases are either direct (primary) or secondary contacts of NegOr CoV 191, the provincial government official who is an authorized person outside of residence (APOR) who had traveled to a high-risk area.

The high-ranking official, who is at the isolation facility of the NOPH, has tested positive again for Covid-19, based on his swab test result received over the weekend, Estacion said.

The province received an aggregate total of 434 tests, which included the new positive cases and five recoveries.
