Gretchen Barretto on bashers: ‘We don’t live for the approval of people’

-

Gretchen Barretto said she couldn’t care less about what bashers have to say about her.

In an interview with Aivee Teo, Gretchen said she learned not to care about the opinions of her bashers as she grew older.

“Love or hate, I welcome it all naman — which we don’t live naman for the approval of people. We don’t live for okay, you know, bashers. That doesn’t bother me anymore. I’m 51,” she said.

Asked if she gets affected by bashing, Gretchen admitted she used to when she was younger.

Gretchen then narrated how her partner Tonyboy Cojuangco helped her.

“I remember you know, it was a long time ago when my mom had like opinions on me at that time and I was really terribly distraught and Tony just told me one thing because he felt like I was really going to go you know downhill and then he said, ‘Okay, baba’ (he calls me baba for baby), he was ‘Baba I’ll ask you one question because I was getting really depressed, he goes, ‘Will it matter? Will your life change?’” she said.

She went on: “He’s really good at that and then I said ‘No. No, not really.’ Then he said ‘Well then, will the opinion of others change your life?’ And I said ‘Now it does’ then he goes ‘But for long and then in the future?’ I said ‘No, really I can hid here at home or wherever. He said ‘Exactly, what do you feel now, that you know that it won’t really affect your life. Then he said to me ‘Then why are you bothered?’”

“Then, it opened my life ... I learned, oo nga no, I mean do they have control of my life, my lifestyle or anything else in my [life],” she continued.

On what she has learned throughout the years, she said: “Whatever the situation is, I learned whatever you accept, is what it will be.” (push.abs-cbn.com)
