- By Adrian Stewart Co

Kai Sotto is hoping to realize his dream as the first homegrown Filipino player in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as he throws his name in the 2022 NBA Rookie Draft.

The 7-foot-3 Filipino teenager announced on his Instagram account yesterday his decision to join the draft that will take place on June 23, 2022 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

“I have declared for the 2022 NBA Draft. Please pray for and support me during my quest to fulfill my ultimate dream,” wrote the Gilas Pilipinas big man.

If ever he is selected, Sotto will become the first full Pinoy in the league. Currently, there were two FilipinoAmericans in the NBA in Jordan Clarkson of Utah Jazz and Jalen Green of Houston Rockets.

Prior to his move, Sotto has turned professional two years ago when he signed with NBA G-League’s Ignite but has parted ways with the squad even before he suited up.

Last year, the former Ateneo de Manila

University Blue Eaglets big man signed with Adelaide 36ers in the National Basketball League-Australia as a Special Restricted Player.

Sotto averaged 7.52 points on 50-percent shooting with 4.48 rebounds in his one-anddone stint with 36ers but was a fan favorite making him NBL’s Fans’ Most Valuable Player.

“To the 36ers Management, my teammates, my coaching staff and my agent Joel Bell, I am a better man and a better professional player than a year ago because you all took me under your wing and challenged and mentored me to live up to expectations,” Sotto said.

“To all the fans both old and new who support and even travel to games, and have lifted me up on this incredible journey, I am so blessed and inspired when I read your messages and hear your cheers!” he continued.

Sotto will look to join Charlotte Hornets’ LaMelo Ball, Oklahoma City Thunder’s Josh Giddey, and Orlando Magic’s RJ Hampton as former NBL players who were drafted in the NBA./ASC,
