Dispose campaign materials properly

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 6 (DENR-6) is urging candidates in the recent local and national elections to clear up and dispose properly their used campaign materials.

These include those campaign materials that are hanged, distributed and pasted in the different areas in the community.

“This is not just to remind the candidates but also to urge them to clear their campaign materials and properly dispose them in accordance with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act on RA 9003,” DENR Regional Executive Director Livino B. Duran said.

Duran added “those campaign materials are mostly made of plastics and can be recycled. There are many ways to recycle and make them into something useful, after all, this will lessen the plastics in our garbage, and at the same time, will add some creativity in your community.”

In his message, Acting DENR Secretary Jim O Sampulna said that “win or lose, these candidates must consider the longterm consequences of their campaign materials in the environment. Candidates could show how sincere they are in serving the country this way.”

Republic Act 9003 declares the policy of the state in adopting a systematic, comprehensive and ecological solid waste management program that ensures the protection of public health and the environment and the other proper segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste through the formulation and adoption of best environmental practices.

It is among the 10 priority programs of DENR being given emphasis for every Filipino citizen to observe and practice. (PIA-6)
