SKETCHES FROM A YOUNG DREAMER

RYAN CHRIS Ofrendas de Flores Collection 2019

According to a recent study made by the Academic Journal of Social Forces, only 6% of adults ended up in the careers they dreamed about as kids. Because of this, some might argue that childhood dreams are ultimately futile; this is not the obvious case for Ryan Chris Baylen, CEO and President of RYAN CHRIS House of Fashion.

Baylen’s design house started as “Ryan Chris Gown Rentals” in the outskirts of Sta. Ana, Manila Philippines, where the then 20-something Advertising and PR graduate started his hopes to build a fashion label under his name. “My first investment was a gown I bought for P1,000, that was initially rented for a prom at P500,” said Baylen.

“It was his lifelong dream; I remember him sketching gowns from way back during our elementary days,” said Alexander

John Rico, Baylen’s former classmate. Life is full of unknown twists, unexpected turns, moments of frustrations, and triumphs. That is the balance of life, since it is true that there are no keys to success because the doors are always open to those who are determined to outgrow the challenges and believe in the capacity of their hearts to fulfil their dreams. “Though failure is constant and present in every step, it allowed me to stay grounded and continue to aspire for more,” said Baylen.

Just like everyone, Baylen had his own share of failures. He went to several job interviews only to be turned down. He also opened his own printing shop but had to close it, eventually. But through it all he never gave up and continued to pursue his dream. “I remember Ryan crying over the phone, saying nothing, but that’s all in the past now. I am quite sure that he’s happy with how everything turned out,” said Ricmer Francisco, another one of Baylen’s friends.

And the amazing testimonials about Baylen’s dedication to his dreams kept on coming. “Sir Ryan is so passionate about his craft and he doesn’t rest until he reaches virtual perfection down to the intricate details,” said Myra Jarabe, Baylen’s admin manager. Likewise, the stunning collection dubbed as “Ofrendas de Flores” or Flower Offering is shown during the ENGAGED: BRIDAL AND BEAUTY FASHION WEEKEND EXPO at the One Esplanade, Pasay City.

From one gown rented at P500, Baylen was able to create custom made wedding gowns for hundreds of happy brides, never once losing sight of his goal. “It’s true that sometimes we want to embrace the convenient life, but let me be a living testament that dreams do come true,” he said.
