AJ MUHLACH & ANNA MABASA

An Oath to Keep

-

For years I have waited for the big day to come. Our relationship was about to turn 8 years when AJ popped the question. I was sure it would happen but not that soon. His father passed away a few months ago and I was willing to wait a little more to help him heal from the loss.

AJ and I are very practical so a big wedding wasn’t an option. When I started a small business, I set aside a big portion of my earnings to save up for our wedding. One time, AJ and I went to church and got an answered prayer. Tearyeyed, AJ said, “God heard my prayers.” He just got a project that would pay him enough for a wedding.

We started planning out and I suggested for us to keep it small and intimate. We sent out our STD to 150 guests and almost everyone confirmed and blocked off their calendars for our big day. The theme was decided a long time ago. AJ and I are both into Percy Jackson and the Olympian book series by Rick Riordan. It was the first book we read together. We planned a wedding in ivory with gold details to make it look like a wedding at Mount Olympus. I would be the daughter of Athena, Annabeth Chase. He will be the son of Poseidon, Percy Jackson.

I designed my own gown but I sought a couturier to bring it to life. Instead of a ballgown, I opted for a simple A-line skirt made out of tulle to make it flow gracefully. I wore a corset for the ceremony to cover up the revealing design and took it off during the reception to show off the gold and crystal studs embedded on the nude fabric. My custom-made gladiator heels completed the Grecian look we wanted to achieve.

AJ opted for a full ivory ensemble with our wedding emblem (an owl and a trident with our initials) embroidered in gold at the back. He also wore an anchor and helm cufflinks and a trident pin to represent Poseidon.

Our wedding date was AJ’S birthday, May 20, 2019. “Whatever happens, even if something goes wrong, this day is our day and we should savor every moment of it,” we promised each other. Our guests followed the white dresscode we requested. The interior of the church complemented the theme especially the floral and arches accents. The reception venue was like a feast at Mount Olympus with the pillars and statues appropriately spread around the place.

My walk down the aisle was unforgettable. No “what if’s”, no hesitations. No second-thoughts. I was just focused and looking on to that person in front of me.

That day I promised to never change. No matter how life goes, I will be with this person, to be his comfort, to fight with him no matter what battle this life would bring.

We had time to mingle with our guests after the program and we ended the night with a Game of Thrones finale screening.

It was memorable because everything went beyond our expectations. We were so happy to see that everything went just how we wanted it to be. I can never forget all the family and friends who made efforts to celebrate this day with us, even on a Monday.

It was a day of pure bliss, a dream that came true. “Maktub!” (it is written). The moment I said, “I do”. I knew it was an oath I will keep until my final breath.
