tunying the restaurateur
Anthony “Tunying” Taberna anchors two radio programs on DZMM: Tapatan ni Tunying every Friday night, and Dos Por Dos (along with fellow radio commentator Gerry Baja) every late afternoon from Monday to Friday. Both programs are viewed on the radio station’s live streaming channel, DZMM TeleRadyo. Tunying also cohosts the early-morning lifestyle show Umagang Kay Ganda on Channel 2.
And here’s more: the 42-year-old broadcaster is also a restaurateur. Along with his wife of nearly 10 years, Rossel Velasco-Taberna, he owns and runs Ka Tunying’s Café. He named his food business after his late father Antonio Taberna Sr. “Siya talaga ’yong Tunying. Junior niya ’ko,” he told YES! when he formally introduced the restaurant’s mascot, Tonton, last June 29 at the restaurant’s Timog Avenue branch. (Other branches are found on Visayas Avenue and at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s Terminal 3.)
“Ang totoo niyan, hanggang kagabi, iba ang pangalan niyan, e,” he said, referring to the mascot. “Sabi ko, Tonton na lang, para relatable pati sa mga bata.”
The broadcaster-restaurateur also reintroduced some of the dining spot’s dishes to make them more appealing to both regular and prospective diners. At the same time, he announced that Ka Tunying’s Café has entered into a partnership with The Bistro Group of Restaurants to stay competitive in the food business.
The Bistro Group of Restaurants operates several restaurants, including TGIFridays, Italianni’s, Denny’s, Texas Roadhouse, and Buffalo Wild Wings.
Ka Tunying’s specialties include Bakbakan Platter, tinapa chowder, Cabanatuan longsilog, and kangkong and tuyo pasta. The Bakbakan Platter consists of roasted lechon pork belly, fish fillet with salted egg rolls, gising-gising, and a bowl of rice.
