For the love of cars

YES! (Philippines) - - Stargazing -

In a gesture that was both sweet and admirable, actor Jomari Yllana gave his AE111 Toyota Corolla—his favorite souped-up sedan, which had been with him for decades—to Andre Yllana, his 19-year-old son with his former wife Aiko Melendez.

The turnover, which netizens and petrolheads saw as a ceremonial passing of a father’s love for cars to his son, was immortalized in Jomari’s Instagram post. In the caption to his IG post, the 41-year-old actor wrote: “It’s just like your kids meeting for the first time. My favorite car I kept for decades is yours now.” One of the caption’s many hashtags was #passingthetorchtoyourboy.

Netizens were quick to express their approval of Jomari’s “gift.” After all, it’s difficult for a true car guy to give up his favorite car and leave it in the care of a young person.

In an article posted on October 13, 2017, topgear.com.ph, the website of Summit Media’s motoring magazine Top Gear Philippines, noted that Jomari’s car “obviously has been tastefully put together” and that Jomari himself, whom it described as “a car guy celebrity dad,” has a “deep affinity to the Toyota brand,” having participated in and won local racing circuits in a Toyota car.
