In 2007, SM Markets—a unit of SM retail, Inc., whose chain of stores includes SM Supermarket, SM Hypermarket, and Savemore—introduced the SM Greenbag, then a first of its kind in the industry. This is a reusable shopping bag, meant to discourage the use of plastic bags.

Soon afterwards, SM Markets beefed up its advocacy by launching its Join the M.O.b. (MyOwnbag) campaign, making Wednesday a plasticfree day and giving incentives to SM Greenbag users.

Today, it is estimated that the SM Greenbags have been used in about 30 million instances, which means that the environment has been saved from being polluted by over 75 million plastic bags (assuming that one SM Greenbag is equivalent to two large plastic bags).
