YES! (Philippines) - - News -

Hey, we’re celebrating our 18th anniversary! We were hopeful, we were hardworking, we were bold, but we had no idea how long we’d last. Who would’ve thought? This idea that first came to Lance (“I notice there are no good entertainment magazines here,” he said one day)... whose numbers Lisa worked over, despite warning signals from Tito Dougs about how local showbiz mags historically have never attracted ads... and then thrown my way at a time when my world was not showbiz—who would’ve thought this would actually take off? In April of 2000, it did. We called it YES!, Your Entertainment Source. Eighteen years later, we live to see showbiz for what it is: a landscape where the worlds of art and culture meet the worlds of industry and business. This is a place, you might say, where the left brain meets the right brain. The resultant landscape is thus as exciting and volatile as it is scary and insecure, as inspired and lofty as it is petty and mean. Which stars will survive, which will fade, and will they see it coming? Which fan culture will prevail? How to adjust editorial choice to public taste? When will the industry’s power structure tilt again? What developments in technology will create the next big change? At YES! we adapt where we can, stand our ground where we must. And we’re still meeting some of the brightest and the kindest souls—some of them working their left brain and some their right—and so, at 18, we say we’re still happy to be here. Happy 18th to us all! •
