Story Behind the Song

Three days before Year 2015 was to give way to Year 2016, Moira thought of making a list of New Year’s resolutions. But she couldn’t because, she explains now, there were so many things she couldn’t let go of. And that made her feel bad as a person, so she instead came up with a song “as a note to self na you’re free na from all those expectations.” Thus, the line “Malaya Ka Na”— also the song’s original title.

Fast-forward to 2016: Moira was called in for a meeting with the team working on the movie Camp Sawi. The team leader, director Irene Villamor, had earlier made the teen romance flick Relaks, It’s Just Pag-ibig, whose theme song Moira wrote and sang.

“They told me nga na they needed a song,” she recalls. “And ‘Malaya’ was one of the songs that I had in my baul. But it was, like, a song that I was never gonna release. So when they asked me for that, I was like, ‘Here, you can take it na.’ And then, biglang it blew up, and I was like, ‘Hala!’”
