- By VALERIE LANTAU

TAVIRA || Members of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Bailliage de l’Algarve were joined by the Bailli of Lisbon, Fernando Messias, on Saturday, February 19 for a friendly gastronomic lunch at Restaurant A Ver Tavira, which nestles at the foot of the castle in the picturesque streets of the old town of Tavira. Offering a beautiful, panoramic view of the old Moorish town down to the river and the sea, A Ver Tavira, with its contemporary interior, is very much a combination of the old and the new going forward together.

Chef Luís Brito was recently awarded a Michelin star, a well–deserved accolade for his international career which has seen him cook in Europe, Brazil and Angola. With inspiration in Portuguese cuisine traditions and the wonderful fresh produce of the Algarve region, Chef Luís Brito’s vast experience is helping him create unique combinations and exciting twists to the dishes he serves.

The menu for the friendly gastronomic lunch had wines expertly selected and paired by Sommelier Cláudia Abrantes who took the time to knowledgeably answer any questions the group had regarding the wines served.

After the welcome drink on the terrace, the menu served was as follows: Tuna tartar with soy, ginger and wasabi paired with AdegaMãe Viosinho 2019, Lisbon; Shrimp curry with pumpkin oil paired with Élio Lara Reserva Alvarinho 2020, Minho; Sea bass fillet with lemon rice and coriander paired with Vinha Paz (Encruzado, Malvasia – Fina and Gouveio), Dão.

The meal ended with a delightfully light carob pudding, carob ice cream and chocolate, showcasing the local carob (alfarroba) which grows abundantly in the Algarve. The pudding was served with Villa Oeiras Superior 15 Anos, Carcavelos.

The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, an international gastronomic association with a strong social component, counts 2,500 members in 70 countries. The Chaîne is always happy to welcome new members who enjoy the conviviality and friendship of a shared good meal.
