Enjoying the great outdoors

With summer now upon us, outdoor living is the order of the day. But it is worth remembering that enjoying the great outdoors is something we can do all year round here in the Algarve. Let’s take outdoor cooking — the focus of our article starting on page 26 about trends in outdoor kitchens — many of us who live here are just as likely to enjoy a BBQ dinner at any time in the winter as we are in the summer. Elsewhere in this edition, we look at two exhilarating outdoor pursuits, both of which can be enjoyed all year round: rock climbing on our vertical sea cliffs or one of the latest watersports trends known as hydrofoil surfing. The Algarve will no doubt be less busy than usual this summer, what with on-going travel restrictions, but in the midst of this unprecedented crisis for the tourism industry, it is encouraging to see continuing investment in the region’s hotel offerings with the Algarve’s first luxury urban boutique hotel, the five-star 3HB Hotel having opened in downtown Faro whilst along the coast in the western Algarve, the Carvoeiro Clube Group has spread its wings to operate the charming cliff-top hotel Vivenda Mirada, near Lagos.

Mais à frente nesta edição, olhamos para duas atividades ao ar livre que podem ser gozadas durante todo o ano: escalada nas nossas falésias marítimas verticais ou uma das últimas tendências em desportos aquáticos, conhecida como surf de hidrofólio. O Algarve vai sem dúvida estar menos movimentado do que é habitual este verão, com restrições de viagem em curso, mas, no meio desta crise sem precedentes para a indústria do turismo, é encorajador ver o investimento contínuo na oferta hoteleira da região com o primeiro boutique hotel urbano de luxo do Algarve, o Hotel 3HB de cinco estrelas que abriu no centro de Faro, enquanto ao longo da costa no barlavento algarvio, o Grupo Carvoeiro Clube abriu as suas asas para assumir a operação do charmoso hotel Vivenda Mirada, perto de Lagos.
