The doors have reopened as Madeira seeks to do what it has been doing for over 200 years: welcoming, and in this case, welcoming safely
MADEIRA BANKS ON REPUTATION AS A COVID-SAFE DESTINATION
Safety is the word of the day! Madeira has reopened under the Covid Safe Destination motto, a message that intends to be more than a slogan, capitalizing on its success in stopping the propagation of the pandemic. 'That is a very important argument that very few destinations in the world can offer', says the regional secretary for Tourism and Culture, Eduardo Jesus.
The beginning of planning for the reopening of the destination involved a multi-level operation entailing promotion as well as the design and implementation of safety measures capable of embodying the Covid Safe concept. 'After hearing the sector, Madeira became the first tourist region in the Country to have a Best Practices Handbook to manage biological hazards
A portas reabriram e a Madeira procura fazer
which has allowed it to evolved into the destination's sanitary certification project', explains the regional secretary.
This certification includes recommendations for airplane travel to Madeira and Porto Santo, transfers and tourist transportations, tourist accommodation, tourist entertainment, tourism posts, travel agencies, public spaces like viewpoints, pedestrian paths, park usage, tours and natural bookings and camping and also for public beaches and pools, tourist entertainment events and museums, cultural centres and monuments.
The entire strategy is built on three criteria: social distancing, the use of individual protection equipment and sanitary safety. Eduardo Jesus mentions that the handbook 'was elaborated with the contributions and ideas of people from the whole sector' and
'is updated every week'. It is available at the visitmadeira.pt website.
The certification process is guided by the Madeira Promotion Bureau and is ensured by the SGS multinational, which the regional secretary says, 'allows for the Region to have international projection in the four corners of the world'.
With these ingredients and the destination's natural attributes, Madeira hopes to be chosen for people's holidays. In a first phase, the Portuguese market should carry a heavier load. 'This year, in particular, there will be a trend for closer markets to be the ones who meet our advertising, even though there are good conditions for tourists to arrive over from the more traditional markets, like Britain and Germany among others', says Eduardo Jesus.
The manager of Turismo da Madeira recalls that the Portuguese's preference for Madeira is an old one: 'It has been a very important market for the Region'. Furthermore, the region is the 2020 Preferred Destination of the Portuguese Tourism and Travel Association.
The recovery will be a gradual process throughout the summer. The first phase culminates in September with the return of events from the tourism entertainment calendar. The novelty is the Flower Festival, initially set for May, but which had to be moved to September because of the pandemic and will thus coincide with the Madeira Wine Festival.´
Eduardo Jesus hopes for this to be 'the big moment of the relaunch of Madeira as a destination with the markets for national and international tourists'.
The goal of the events is 'to impose a big event on the market for it to be a turning point in the response to the pandemic crisis that has plunged us and to rebuild the trust of the market, the wellbeing and the joy of people, visitors and residents alike'.
There will be other events until the end of the year, like the Columbus Festival, in Porto Santo, the Nature Festival, in October, and the Christmas and New Year's festivities.
By reopening, Madeira intends to revive the art of welcoming people and preserve the tradition of being one of the oldest tourist destinations in Europe. prevista para maio, mas que por causa da pandemia foi adiada para setembro, coincidindo com a Festa do Vinho Madeira.
