The beach of Porto Santo has long been admired for its beauty and quality. Now it is also acknowledged as a safe place
Never before, over six centuries of human presence has the size of the beach of Porto Santo been as advantageous as it now is. The extension of the sandy beach allows for the social distancing begotten by the Covid-19 pandemic. The beach has more than enough space for rules to be followed while at the same time allowing people to have fun and enjoy their family holidays in peace and safety.
The 9 km-long beach, along with the island's status as having no Covid-19 cases have caught the attention of the European Best Destinations Organization. They included Porto Santo in the list of the ten safest beaches in Europe for this Summer season, something picked up on by Forbes magazine.
This choice also reflects the hotel offer, since Porto Santo features a number of medium-sized hotels that fulfil safety and hygiene requirements, as well as lodging houses that allow for a more isolated holiday.
Bruno Martins, the general manager of the Vila Baleira Resort, one of the island's reference hotels, understands that there may be concerns about travelling but assures that Porto Santo is ready to build trust' with visitors.
That trust entails fewer occupied bedrooms, or the comfort of 56 flats, ensuring better isolation. That is why he concludes that 'tourists can travel to Porto Santo without concern. We can ensure that our hotel will be adequately adapted to host tourists with the same care and dedication that we have always shown over 20 years in the business.

A extensão da praia, 9 km, aliada à circunstância de ser uma ilha sem casos de Covid-19, chamaram a atenção da European Best Destinations Organization, que incluiu o Porto Santo na lista de dez praias seguras para as férias deste verão, uma lista que foi também destacada pela revista americana Forbes.

Bruno Martins' trust is shared by others and the demand is there. Many of the visitors are Madeiran, who already traditionally spent their holidays on this beach. Others travel from different places where flight connections have been reactivated.
In their text on Porto Santo, the European Best Destinations Organization highlights that 'after months of confinement it is a perfect destination to relax in Nature'. Essa confiança passa por menos quartos ocupados, ou pelo conforto de 56 apartamentos, que garantem maior isolamento. Por isso conclui que “os turistas podem viajar descansados para o Porto Santo. Podemos assegurar que o nosso hotel estará devidamente adaptado para receber os turistas com o mesmo carinho e dedicação que sempre apresentamos ao longo de 20 anos de operação”.
A confiança de Bruno Martins tem sido partilhada por outros e a procura tem existido. Muitos dos visitantes são madeirenses, que já tinham a tradição de fazer férias nesta praia. Outros viajam a partir de origens onde as ligações aéreas foram retomadas.

That is how it was for centuries. The beach was little more than one of Nature's whims. In spite of its beauty, it often stopped people and merchandises from being safely unloaded.
Until the picture starts to change early in the 20th century. All around the World, concerns about wellbeing increase and the sea started to be regarded as the ideal stage for healthy activities.
In 1924, Madeiran physician Nuno Silvestre Teixeira writes a chronicle dealing with the attributes of the beach, mentioning that 'there is not health practice like Porto Santo'. He mentions the clearness of the water and concludes that a stay on the island would be good for one's health, the beach being unrivalled in Portugal.
That is when the picture starts to change. In the 1930s, when the islands of toda a costa sul da ilha, foi sempre uma porta de entrada de visitantes, alguns indesejados, como piratas e corsários que, tirando partido precisamente da suavidade com que o mar abraça o areal dourado, demandavam a ilha saqueando o pouco que existia.
Foi assim durante séculos. A praia não era mais do que um capricho da Natureza, que muitas vezes, apesar da beleza, impedia que fossem desembarcadas pessoas ou descarregadas mercadorias.
Até que no início do século XX a realidade começa a mudar. Por todo o Mundo aumentam as preocupações com o bem-estar e o mar começa a ser visto como o palco ideal para atividades saudáveis.
Em 1924 o médico madeirense Nuno Silvestre Teixeira escreve uma crónica em que aborda as características da praia, referindo que “não há estação de saúde como o Porto Santo”. Refere a limpidez das águas e conclui que uma estadia na ilha fazia bem à saúde e que a praia não tinha rival em Portugal.
A imagem muda a partir daí. Na década de 1930, quando as ilhas da Madeira e do Porto Santo começam a fazer promoção turística organizada, o Porto Santo consta das imagens que correm mundo.
O tempo levou a que os 9 km de areia amarela fossem cada vez mais conhecidos e apreciados. Primeiro pelos madeirenses. Depois por visitantes de outros de pontos de Portugal e de outros países.
No final do século XX os investigadores dedicaram-se a estudar as propriedades da

The weather led to the 9 kms of yellow sand being acknowledged and appreciated more and more. First by Madeirans. Then by visitors from other parts of Portugal and other countries.
In the late 20th century, researchers dedicated themselves to studying the properties of the sand to understand whether there is any scientific evidence for the feeling of wellbeing claimed by visitors after a few days of bathing in the sun and the sea by the golden sand.
The results of those studies illustrated that biogenically carbonated sand, formed 35 million years ago, can have therapeutic properties, improving the wellbeing of patients afflicted by musculoskeletal conditions.
But the beach is also a small slice of paradise.
