FUNCHAL PLANS TO BRING THE WHOLE ISLAND TOGETHER IN BID TO BECOME EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE

The strategy for Funchal's application for 2027 European Culture Capital is already set: to go beyond the city's physical boundaries, reach other continents and gain international visibility.

A challenge was issued to the other municipalities in Madeira to join and they soon became part of a joint platform for the application. But the goal is also to involve Funchal's sister cities, spread the World over, as well as European Union Outermost Regions, making this an application representative of all.

This pooling together of efforts will be reflected in the cultural programmes, with joint initiatives.

Funchal is in the race alongside 9 other Portuguese cities: Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Leiria, Guarda,

Oeiras and Viana do Castelo. One of these will be chosen to be the 2027 European Culture Capital, with a city in Latvia.

Results are to be announced in late 2022. Until then, Funchal will continue to state its brand.

Marking the beginning of the application's cultural programme was the 'Tchiloli Unlimited' exhibition, by René Tavares, which portrays a form of theatre popular in São Tomé e Principe and which has roots in Madeira.

Throughout the next few months, the cultural programme will be intense, always concerned with covering a broad range. There will be several events like the European Culture Capital seal. The range of the initiatives could be determining the choice for Funchal.

Aestratégia da candidatura do Funchal a Capital Europeia da Cultura em 2027 já está definida: ultrapassar os limites físicos da cidade, chegar a outros continentes e ganhar visibilidade internacional.

O desafio foi lançado aos restantes municípios da Madeira, que aderiram a uma plataforma conjunta para a candidatura. Mas o objetivo é também envolver as cidades geminadas com o Funchal e que estão espalhadas pelo Mundo, e ainda as cidades das Regiões Ultraperiféricas da União Europeia, tornando esta candidatura também representantes destas regiões.

Esta união de esforço deverá ter reflexos na programação cultural, com iniciativas conjuntas.

O Funchal está na corrida com outras 9 cidades portuguesas: Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Leiria, Guarda, Oeiras e Viana do Castelo. Uma delas será escolhida para ser Capital Europeia da Cultura em 2027, a par de uma cidade da Letónia.

O resultado não será conhecido antes do final de 2022. Até lá o Funchal procura afirmar a sua marca.

O momento que marcou o início da programação cultural da candidatura foi a exposição “Tchiloli Unlimited”, de René Tavares, que mostra uma forma de teatro popular em São Tomé e Príncipe, que tem raízes na Madeira.

The Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre, an emblematic late 19th century building is one of the key points of the cultural programme. But events will naturally spread throughout the city.

If Funchal is the chosen city, it will be the European Culture Capital to be the most distant from European decision-making centres and the only one in the Atlantic.

Ao longo dos próximos meses o cartaz cultural será intenso, sempre com a preocupação da abrangência. Serão vários os eventos com o selo da Capital Europeia da Cultura. O alcance das iniciativas pode ser determinante para a escolha do Funchal.

O Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, um icónico edifício do final do século XIX é um dos pontos centrais da programação cultural. Mas é natural que os eventos se espalhem pela cidade.

Se o Funchal for a cidade escolhida, será a Capital Europeia da Cultura mais distante dos centros de decisão europeus e a única, em pleno oceano Atlântico. funchal2027.cm-funchal.pt
