FROM ANTWERP TO PORTUGAL, THE STORY OF DIREGGIO
Founded 26 years ago in Antwerp, the jewellery brand Direggio arrived in Portugal at the hands of Arno Meirhaeghe, son of the founder Fundada há 26 anos, na Antuérpia, a marca de joalharia Direggio chegou a Portugal pelas mãos de Arno Meirhaeghe, filho d
It could have been a long-thought path, but interestingly enough, Arno Meirhaeghe, the fourth generation of a family linked to jewellery, was far from imagining that, sooner or later, he would join the family business. His career began in the hospitality business, after training at the renowned Les Roches school in Switzerland. His passion for travel and luxury hotels prompted a move to this field, always with the endorsement of his family. “I always felt a sense of responsibility in joining the family business, continuing the legacy and keep growing our name within the jewellery world, but it was never something my parents engraved in us. They ultimately wanted us to follow whatever career path we wanted. It wasn’t obvious to me throughout university and my work experience abroad that I would end up working in the jewellery universe. It was truly unexpected but very natural and made complete sense. We were managing a small boutique hotel in the Douro valley just one year ago and now we run the second Direggio shop.”
Founded in 1993 by his father and uncle in Antwerp, today, Direggio is one of the most influential jewellery boutiques to hail from the Belgian city. “My father and uncle started everything by themselves, from the design to the production. Today, the Direggio team consists of 11 highly experienced goldsmiths and designers. I am extremely proud of what my father has accomplished and what this means for our family legacy. I believe it is now my time to join in and expand the business to new horizons.”
Arno came to Portugal in 2016 after completing a course in hospitality. His girlfriend, Teresa Symington Caxide, who he met in Switzerland, was from Porto, and they decided to move to her homeland. The decision to open the second Direggio store in Portugal’s second city ended up happening naturally. “Over the years I algo que os meus pais me tivessem incutido.
A namorada,
realised that there are no jewellery stores in Portugal like I know in Antwerp. Through the years we sold some pieces here as people were noticing Teresa’s jewellery and loved it. We felt like we could fill this hole in the market and thus started making plans for Direggio Porto.”
And so it was... Direggio settled in the old quarter of Foz do Douro, in a traditional fishermen’s neighbourhood that Arno fell in love with. “My favourite part of the city is the old Foz area by the river mouth, where the fishermen live, with all the curvy cobbled stone streets. It was just perfect when we found the location for the shop in the middle of this neighbourhood. I wanted to reflect a little of my hometown in the decoration of the shop and have clients feel welcome and at ease when visiting Direggio.”
It was last year that Arno and Teresa opened the doors of the first Direggio in Portugal. With the mission of revolutionszing the jewellery market in the country, bringing pieces of a more daring character in an industry guided by traditionalism, the couple adds that, despite the difficult period that all commerce is going through due to the pandemic, the feedback has been positive. “It is obviously an adaption for our brand and for customers that purchase high-end jewellery here in Portugal, as we have a more modern vision when we design our jewellery and at times can be daring. We aim to educate the consumer on all the precious stones and different qualities and clarities of a diamond, accompanying them throughout the entire process, ensuring and guaranteeing trust in the product delivered (…) The feedback has been extremely positive given the circumstances and the moment at which we decided to launch Direggio. It has of course been a struggle for the shop, as Covid-19 measures have forced us to close our doors.
good and has attracted many people. We are slowly beginning to build a circle of entrusted clients that keep on coming back.”
As for the characteristics that Arno thinks distinguish his brand from others on the market, he does not hesitate to highlight the fully personalised service, which goes from the initial sketch to the delivery of the piece. “All of our jewellery is handmade in our atelier in Antwerp. Therefore, the entire production happens within our shop and we do not outsource any companies to do part of the job. This is an extremely important factor for ourselves and our customers as it is much easier to ensure and control quality when we are overlooking the entire process. And above this, we also know the diamonds are in safe and talented hands. All our diamonds are ethically sourced and verified by our team before being used in a piece. The fact that Teresa and I are so young means that we also have fresh and vibrant ideas in an industry that is usually quite dated and very traditional. We came up with some very original, cool pieces that definitely differentiate us from other places. Additionally, we believe we have created a space in which clients can bring their dreams to life by sharing their ideas with us and accompanying the entire process from the first sketch to the last polish of the piece. It is not common to have such a personal, close-up experience, and we make sure that anyone who walks into our shop feels comfortable and special.”
Defining Direggio's target as very diversified, covering all ages and backgrounds, Arno's main objective is to meet all customer requests, without exception. “The knowledge and contacts of our team in Antwerp are so extensive that it allows us to find nearly any stone. We want anyone and everyone to be buying our jewels and wearing them with pride, and know that there is something for everyone at Direggio. We want to ensure that we always have diamonds in all shapes and sizes. We also want to make sure men no longer feel the need to travel out of the country to buy an engagement ring; we will give them the full service here in Porto.”
For the future of the brand, plans include its expansion in Portugal and, later, the world. “Our short-term goal is to expand to Lisbon and possibly have pop-ups around Portugal. We are also looking into developing partnerships with fashion and luxury brands. We aim to expand Direggio globally and become an influential and trendy name within the jewellery industry,” he concludes. o processo, desde o primeiro desenho até ao último polimento da peça.
