THE FIRST HYDROPLANE ARRIVED IN MADEIRA OVER 100 YEARS AGO

On March 22nd 1921, Madeira officially entered the aviation era. A Felixtowe F.3 hydroplane landed in the bay of Funchal, marking the first aerial crossing between Lisbon and Funchal.
The travel lasted 7 hours and 40 minutes and this achievement remains a landmark in Portuguese aeronautics. At the helm of the plane were Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho, the fathers of aviation in Portugal and authors of the first aerial crossing between Portugal and Brazil in the following year. In fact, the Lisbon-Funchal connection allowed the aviators to perfect their instruments and techniques.
The date was celebrated by the Funchal Town hall through a commemorative structure in Avenida do Mar and an exhibition open until April 22nd at the town hall building featuring objects from Museu do Ar and several photographs. A booklet with information was also released to preserve the memory of this achievement and will continue to be distributed after the exhibition ends.
The mayor of Funchal, Miguel Silva Gouveia, highlighted how the date 'was the turning of a new page, a moment that brought Funchal closer to Lisbon and Europe'.
Not until March 1949 would Madeira have regular air connections. These were provided by the Aquila Airways company but were financially non-viable, despite lasting for nine years. Regular flights would only return in 1964, with the opening of the Madeira airport.
A22 de março de 1921 a Madeira entrava oficialmente na era na aviação. Um hidroavião Felixtowe F.3 amarava na baía do Funchal, assinalando a primeira travessia aérea entre Lisboa e o Funchal.
A viagem durou 7 horas e 40 minutos. O feito é uma referência na aeronáutica portuguesa. Aos comandos do avião estavam Sacadura Cabral e Gago Coutinho, pais da aviação em Portugal e os autores da primeira travessia aérea entre Portugal e o Brasil, no ano seguinte. Aliás, a travessia Lisboa – Funchal serviu para os aviadores aperfeiçoarem técnicas e instrumentos.
A data foi assinalada pela Câmara Municipal do Funchal, através de um marco comemorativo, na Avenida do Mar e de uma exposição, até 22 de abril, no átrio do edifício dos paços do concelho, com peças do Museu do Ar e diversas fotografias. Para que a informação e a memória deste feito perdure, foi também lançado um livreto informativo que continuará a ser distribuído após o fim da exposição.
O presidente da Câmara do Funchal, Miguel Silva Gouveia destacou que esta data “foi um virar de página, um momento que aproximou o Funchal de Lisboa e da Europa."
Seria preciso esperar até março de 1949 para a Madeira ter um serviço regular de ligações aéreas, a cargo da companhia Aquila Airways. Durou nove anos, mas era inviável financeiramente. Os voos regulares apenas seriam retomados em 1964, com a abertura do Aeroporto da Madeira.
