Madeiran designs Olympics uniforms

Andrea Franco's life was meant to take a different direction. She studied to be a social worker. But exposure to Madeiran fashion creator André Pereira changed her life and took her down the roads of fashion. This young woman from Machico would create accessories and the stylist would motivate her to pursue studies in the area. A new degree followed, in Oporto.

And eventually that choice bore its fruit. Andrea Franco is the creator for the clothing and accessory collection to be worn by Portuguese representatives at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. And she admits that 'it is an honour to have participated in this project'.

The colours may take one by surprise. The pieces feature not red and green – the colours of Portugal's modern flag – but blue and white, which were the colours of the first Portuguese flag, in the 12th century. The design involves a cross, alluding to Christianity, taken to Japan by the Portuguese. And even the language, taken by Portuguese sailours to the land of the rising sun, served as inspiration.

Avida de Andrea Franco estava destinada a seguir outro caminho. Estudou para ser assistente social. Mas o contacto com o criador de moda madeirense André Pereira mudou-lhe a vida e levou-a ao caminho da moda. A jovem, natural de Machico, criava acessórios e o estilista incentivou-a a estudar na área. Seguiu-se uma nova licenciatura, no Porto.

E os frutos desta escolha acabaram por surgir. Andrea Franco foi a criadora da coleção de roupas e acessórios que equipam os representantes de Portugal nos Jogos Olímpicos de Verão, em Tóquio. E confessa que “é uma honra ter participado neste projeto”.

A cor pode surpreender. Há uma presença não do verde e vermelho das atuais cores nacionais, mas do azul e do branco, as cores da primeira bandeira de Portugal, no século XII. O desenho envolve a cruz, numa alusão ao cristianismo levado pelos portugueses para o Japão. E até a língua, levada pelos navegadores portugueses para terras do sol nascente, serviu de inspiração.

'This was a collection of 30 textile pieces plus footwear, a bag and a baseball cap', the stylist explains.

This opportunity is related to the final i nternship of her degree, which she undertook with Portuguese textile company Têxtil Cais de Pedra, which encompasses the Lion of Porshes and Decenio brands. 'I joined Decenio as an intern'. And it was on her third month there that 'she got an invitation from the group to stay working there'. Not knowing what the offer entailed, she was invited to design the Olympics uniforms and to liaise with the Portuguese Olympic Committee.

The first step was creating the uniforms for the Portuguese athletes participating in the 2019 Minsk Europeans. The second part of the project was to design the uniforms and accessories to be worn in Tokyo.

Her ties to André Pereira remain and Andrea Franco will not give away what her next steps will be. Esta oportunidade está relacionada com o estágio de final de licenciatura, feito na empresa portuguesa Têxtil Cais de Pedra, que engloba as marcas Lion of Porshes e Decenio. “Entrei para a Decenio como estagiária”. E no terceiro mês “tive um convite do grupo para ficar a trabalhar”. Sem saber o que era a proposta, foi convidada para desenhar os trajes olímpicos e fazer a ligação com o Comité Olímpico Português.

O primeiro passo foi a criação dos trajes dos portugueses que participaram nos Jogos Europeus de 2019, em Minsk. A segunda parte do projeto foram os fatos e acessórios da representação portuguesa em Tóquio.

A ligação com André Pereira continua e Andrea Franco não revela quais serão os próximos passos. Mas sabe que quer continuar ligada à moda .
