The Flower Festival is one of the most striking moments of the year in Madeira. It took its inspiration from the island's centuries-old ties with flowers from all around the world, brought over by travelers much to the delight of those who visit gardens.
The festival celebrates that tradition. Though usually held in spring, this year it is to be happen in fall, between October 1 and 24.
One of the highlights continues to be the parade, an event held ever since 1979 and which this year is set to take to the main streets of Funchal on the 3rd.
Another iconic moment is completed again in the previous day, when each child offers a flower to build a flower wall in Praça do Município, symbolically given the name of 'Wall of Hope'.
The Flower Festival also occupies the city centre and Avenida Arriaga with flower carpet displays, a flower market, and spaces where typical drinks and local gastronomy can be enjoyed.
Another tradition is the Flower Exhibition, after which the festival was named. Held at Praça do Povo, it displays the work of several flower producers from around Madeira.
The closing days of the event feature floral sculptures and the Madeira Flower Collection, to happen on the 23rd and the 24th, showcasing local fashion designers.
AFesta da Flor é um dos momentos mais marcantes do ano na Madeira. Foi buscar inspiração à secular ligação da ilha às flores oriundas de todo o mundo, trazidas por viajantes e que podem ser apreciadas nos jardins.
A festa celebra essa tradição. Associada habitualmente à primavera, realiza-se este ano no outono, entre os dias 1 e 24 de outubro.
Um dos pontos altos continua a ser o cortejo alegórico, que na tarde do dia 3 invade as principais ruas do Funchal, um acontecimento que se realiza desde 1979.
Um dia antes repete-se outro momento marcante, em que cada criança contribui com uma flor para construir, na Praça do Município, um mural de flores simbolicamente denominado por “Muro da Esperança”.
A Festa da Flor passa também pela Placa Central da Avenida Arriaga, onde além de tapetes de flores e do mercado das flores, há espaços para experimentar a gastronomia local e as bebidas típicas.
Outra tradição é a Exposição da Flor, que de resto deu o nome à festa. Realiza-se na Praça do Povo e exibe o trabalho de diversos produtores de flores de toda a Madeira.
Nos últimos dias do evento haverá esculturas florais em exibição e nos dias 23 e 24 acontece o evento Madeira Flower Collection, dedicado aos criadores de moda locais.
