Unlikely friends
The municipality of Santa Cruz seeks to relaunch the cultural sector through the fusion of several forms of artistic expression and an (a)typical project

Teresinha de Jesus' is a popular song that tells the tale of a girl who finds love. But what would this piece of music sound like in a version between folk and rock? That is what the C'azoada group and artist Lee Jones set out to discover and the resulting piece of music was… atypical.
The new shape given to this, and other songs comes about as the result of a challenge set by the Town Hall of Santa Cruz to local artists through the (a)typical initiative.
This is a small fusion project combining the artistic manifestations which are more traditional and better reflect the identity of the area with more contemporary projects.
The name points to tradition, to what is typical, but also seeks to portray the state in which the world finds itself: (a)typical. It is an initiative that also seeks to support cultural players at a time when there is much uncertainty in the sector.
The launch of the project resulted in the creation of a digital-audiovisual platform which has taken on the role of a portfolio of sorts for the cultural tissue of Santa Cruz.
For Taciana Gouveia, one of the people heading the project, the artistic dialogue set by the (a)typical fosters the rediscovery of forgotten heritage sites in Santa Cruz while simultaneously making it possible for the audience to enjoy music in a new way.
This first edition focused on six pieces of work, recorded in the several parishes of the municipality. They portray the fusion of several forms of artistic expression which include the visual arts, theatre, ethnography and music.
In terms of music, for instance, one finds a blend of unlikely 'friends', like rock, fado, pop and folk.
For now, (a)typical remains within the digital sphere. There is interest on the part of the Town Hall of Santa Cruz in organizing live events but no dates have yet been set.
'What we can confirm is that for June 2022, in the context of the municipality's anniversary [June 25], we will be holding a big show with all the fusion projects in a hybrid format, with a live and audiovisual component', reveals Taciana Gouveia.
Five new fusion projects are also already expected for next year, and they will be even more 'atypical'. 'Not even the sky will be the limit', concludes Taciana Gouveia.

A nova roupagem desta e de outras músicas surge de um desafio lançado pela Câmara Municipal de Santa Cruz aos artistas locais, através da iniciativa (a)típico.
Trata-se de um projeto de fusão que une as manifestações artísticas mais tradicionais e identitárias do concelho a projetos contemporâneos.
O nome remete para o tradicional, para o típico, mas procura também caracterizar o estado em que o mundo se encontra: (a)típico. É uma iniciativa que pretende também apoiar os atores culturais, numa altura de grande indefinição para o sector.
Do lançamento do projeto resultou a criação de uma plataforma digital-audiovisual, que se assume como uma espécie de portfólio do tecido cultural do município de Santa Cruz.
Para Taciana Gouveia, uma das responsáveis pela produção do projeto, o diálogo artístico estabelecido pelo (a)típico potencia a redescoberta de lugares esquecidos do património santa-cruzense ao mesmo tempo que possibilita ao público uma nova forma de consumir música.
Nesta primeira edição foram dados a conhecer seis trabalhos, gravados nas várias freguesias do concelho, e em que é possível assistir à fusão de várias expressões artísticas, onde se incluem as artes visuais, o teatro, a etnografia e a música.
Na questão musical, assiste-se por exemplo a uma mescla entre “amigos” improváveis, como o rock e o fado e o pop e o folk.
Por enquanto, o (a)típico mantém-se numa vertente virtual. Há vontade da Câmara de Santa Cruz em realizar eventos presenciais, mas por enquanto não há data marcada.
“O que podemos confirmar é que para junho de 2022, no âmbito do aniversário do concelho [25 de junho], faremos um grande espetáculo com todos os projetos de fusão, em formato híbrido, com matriz presencial e audiovisual”, revela Taciana Gouveia.
Para o próximo ano estão também já previstos cinco novos projetos de fusão, que serão ainda mais “atípicos”. “Nem o céu será o limite”, conclui Taciana Gouveia. www.atipico-madeira.com
