Surprises in the fireworks
In Madeira the tradition that has been going on since 1866 is back yet again: lighting up the beginning of the new year with fireworks. It lasts about 8 minutes, with more than 1,000 pyrotechnic shots per minute. It is one of the greatest spectacles in the world.
Over the decades the fire locations have varied, but the aim is always to take advantage of Funchal's amphitheatre-like layout.
The entry in 2022 represents an investment of around 1 million euros and the organisers promise surprises to create spectacle in the minutes before midnight.
The fireworks display is part of Madeira Tourism's official poster but started as a habit in the homes of some of the island's wealthier families.
