O Sotavento, que faz fronteira com a Espanha, tem seis campos de golfe e registou 156 mil voltas em 2016. No ano passado foi melhor, registando 12 por cento das voltas no Algarve, que teve 1,3 milhões de voltas em 2017. Castro Marim registou uma subida de 14 por cento, a maior do ano nesta zona, comparativamente a 2016. O “centro” do golfe no Algarve é o concelho de Loulé, com 14 campos de luxo (2 de 27 buracos) e onde estão reunidos todos os ingredientes para uma maior afluência de golfistas estrangeiros – perto do aeroporto, muitos hotéis de 4 e 5 estrelas abertos todo o ano, muitos restaurantes, casino e muita animação, mesmo no inverno. No Sotavento não há hotéis de 5 estrelas (uma exceção) e os que estão abertos no período de inverno não estão vocacionados para o golfe. Não há animação e os restaurantes são poucos. Por isso, os golfistas estrangeiros vêm um ano e não regressam. No Sotavento os principais hotéis encontram-se em Tavira, Altura e Monte Gordo. A Quinta da Ria é o único campo com um hotel integrado. Castro Marim oferece um conjunto de vivendas de luxo para os golfistas, a preços acessíveis e sempre com grande ocupação e tem já prevista a construção de um hotel junto ao clube de golfe. Curiosamente, o Sotavento está também a crescer como destino ideal, no inverno, para estágios de outras modalidades desportivas, como o ciclismo (equipas jovens, masculinas e femininas) e atletismo de fundo (maratona, marcha, etc). E estas são um excelente contributo para alguns hotéis de 3 e 4 estrelas, que chegam a ocupação recorde no inverno. Isto além do turismo Sénior, de vários países.
