Dimitrios Papadatos an Australian of Greek origin won the 56th Portugal Open and three Portuguese were among the top ten, the best ever result for Portuguese national golf in European tournaments. In this tournament the national players set other records. The Open was played on the Morgado do Reguengo (Portimão) course, integrated into the calendar of the European Challenge Tour and distributed 200 thousand euros in prizes. It was attended by 156 players from 25 nationalities from four continents and the Portuguese set a new participation record fielding 13 players. The oldest national tournament was held in good weather, sunny throughout the week, but the wind hindered the game and better results. On the last day there was much anticipation and yearning for a Portuguese victory, with Filipe Lima in first tied with the Welshman Stuart Manley and Papadatos one strike behind. In the middle of the round Lima and Papadatos were both tied in the lead, at 7 under par. But a bogey by Filipe Lima on 13 left the Australian alone in the lead. And waiting later in the clubhouse for the performance of the Portuguese on the last three holes. Lima tried to birdie to push the decision to a play-off and on 18 attacked the flag, but the ball passed the green and he ended up with a bogey. Lima finished the first round in 68th place but was moving up (9th on the second day and tied for the leadafter the third).His only fault on the 13, which resulted in a bogey, withdrew the possibility of a play-off and triumph. “I thought I had the ability to win the Open today, but as I said before, it also takes a bit of luck to win. Today luck was not on my side. I came with the idea of winning,” said Lima in the end.
Oaustraliano Dimitrios Papadatos, de origem grega, venceu o 56º Open de Portugal e três portugueses ficaram entre os dez primeiros classificados, o melhor resultado de sempre para o golfe nacional em torneios profissionais europeus. Neste torneio os jogadores nacionais estabeleceram outros recordes. O Open disputou-se no percurso do Morgado do Reguengo (Portimão), integrado no calendário do European Challenge Tour e distribuiu 200 mil euros em prémios. Teve a participação de 156 jogadores de 25 nacionalidades de quatro continentes e os portugueses estabeleceram um novo recorde de presenças com 13 jogadores. O mais antigo torneio nacional decorreu com bom tempo, sol durante toda a semana mas o vento a dificultar o jogo e melhores resultados. Na última volta houve muita expectativa e ansiava-se por um triunfo português, com Filipe Lima em primeiro empatado com o galês Stuart Manley e Papadatos a uma pancada. A meio da volta Lima e Papadatos estavam ambos empatados no comando, com 7 abaixo do par. Mas um bogey de Filipe Lima no 13 deixou o australiano isolado. E esperou depois no clubhouse pelo desempenho do português nos últimos três buracos. Lima tentou o birdie para levar o título ao play-off e no 18 atacou a bandeira, mas a bola passou o green e acabou com bogey. Lima terminou a primeira volta entre os 68º classificados mas foi subindo (9º no segundo dia e 1º empatado no terceiro) e só mesmo uma falha no 13, que originou o bogey, lhe terá retirado a possibilidade do play-off e eventualmente o triunfo. “Pensava que tinha capacidade de ganhar hoje o Open, mas como disse antes é preciso também um pouco de sorte para ganhar. Hoje a sorte não virou para o meu lado. Eu vinha com a ideia de ganhar”, referiu Lima no final.

It did not appear in the Order of Merit but with the triumph at Morgado climbed to 9th place. After the Portugal Open the Challenge Tour OM includes six Portuguese professionals: Pedro Figueiredo (42nd, up 15), Tiago Cruz (45th, new), Tomás Silva (88th, 9th), Ricardo Santos (10th, 10th), João Carlota (126th) . Highlights for the Portuguese players: From the 13 that started, seven went on to make the cut, two entered the final round in the title fight, three were in the “top 10” and the best amateur (Vitor Lopes) was in 14th place. With the cut at 146, the remaining Portuguese in the tournament were Tomás Melo Gouveia (148 strokes) Pedro Lencart Silva (amateur, 149), Miguel Gaspar (151), Tomás Bessa (153), João Ramos (154) and Tiago Rodrigues (157). The Open has brought together a large part of the new generation that wants to reach the main circuit (European Tour). In the previous edition the English Wallace won with 22 under par but this year the Morgado course was more challenging and demanding. Even so 21 players finished under par. “É a vitória mais importante da minha carreira e um passo importantíssimo na minha caminhada para o European Tour”, disse Papadatos, salientando que “para o público teria sido uma grande festa ver o Filipe ganhar, mas estou feliz por ter sido eu”. Papadatos, de 27 anos, tornou-se profissional em 2013 e obteve agora a sua primeira vitória na Europa, depois de três triunfos na Austrália. Não constava da Ordem de Mérito mas com o triunfo no Morgado subiu ao 9º lugar. Após o Open de Portugal a OM do Challenge Tour integra seis profissionais portugueses: Filipe Lima (16º, subiu 98 lugares), Pedro Figueiredo (42º, subiu 15), Tiago Cruz (45º, novo), Tomás Silva (88º, desceu 9), Ricardo Santos (108º, desceu 10), João Carlota (126º). O grande destaque foi para os jogadores portugueses. Dos 13 iniciais, sete passaram o “cut” (um recorde), dois entraram na última volta na luta pelo título, três ficaram no “top 10” e o melhor amador (Vitor Lopes) ficou em 14º lugar. Com o cut fixado nas 146 pancadas, os restantes portugueses na prova foram Tomás Melo Gouveia (148 pancadas) Pedro Lencart Silva (amador, 149), Miguel Gaspar (151), Tomás Bessa (153), João Ramos (154) e Tiago Rodrigues (157). O Open reuniu grande parte da nova geração que ambiciona chegar ao circuito principal (European Tour). Na anterior edição o inglês Wallace venceu com 22 abaixo do par mas este ano o campo do Morgado foi mais desafiante e exigente. Mesmo assim 21 jogadores concluíram abaixo do par.
The next edition of the Open, also at Morgado, may provide some surprises. Em 2019 Portimão será a “Cidade Europeia do Desporto” e na entrega dos prémios a autarca Isilda Gomes referiu que “pode ser que para o ano haja mais apoio para o Open de Portugal”. O Presidente do Grupo NAU Hotels & Resort, Mário Ferreira, faz um “balanço muito positivo”, depois dos muitos elogios ao campo e diz que “faltou a cereja no topo do bolo, que seria entregar o troféu de campeão a um jogador português, que esteve prestes a acontecer”. E depois de não ter conseguido obter este ano os apoios para colocar o Open noutro patamar de importância, Mário Ferreira não deixa dúvidas: “vamos continuar a tentar angariar esses apoios no próximo ano e logo veremos se será um Challenge, um dual ranking ou um full European Tour”.
