Glamour on the Island
Madeira Golf Trophy
It is only the third edition, but the Madeira Golf Trophy is already a classic on the regional and national calendar of social and amateur golf. The tournament is played on the championship course of the Santo da Serra Golf Club, which for the last two decades was the home of the Madeira Islands Open, on the European Tour, but the social program extends throughout the island, for one week. Starting with a welcome cocktail at Quinta Vigia, the seat of the President of the Madeira Government. It is here, in the stunning and well-kept gardens of this 16th century manor house, overlooking the port of Funchal, that the Madeiran President Miguel Albuquerque himself welcomes the players and their guests from all over Europe. Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, France and, of course, Portugal, are the flags present at an event that ends at the fabulous Belmond Reids Palace, the island’s most famous hotel, with a prize-giving ceremony. The secret of this competition, which is the direct heir to the Funchal City Tournament, another iconic contest on the national calendar, lies in several factors. At the head, the experience of all the staff of Santo da Serra accustomed to organizations of great demand. Then the quality of the course itself. It is not every day that we have the opportunity to play on a well-maintained course with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the island’s inland mountains. A course where stars of the European Tour and even world golf passed, such as Severiano Ballesteros, a passionate of Santo da Serra.
There is also the tournament environment - always very competitive - and all the social moments that accompany it. From the welcome cocktail, to the closing by the Atlantic pool of Belmond Reid’s Palace. And, of course, there is Madeira. An island that celebrated 600 years since its discovery this year has much to offer and to know. Is that what happens. During the week before the tournament there is time to travel the island from one end to the other. In Machico, at the extreme East, where, the history books say, the first Portuguese landed, we can get excited about the differences between the two sides of the island: the south coast, warmer and with milder terrain; and the North coast, wilder in the sea and in the landscape. Drive west to Ribeira Brava, where the technological center of the island lies. Where the city grows from the sea towards the mountainous massif, winding through a green valley, that on the way to the central plateau of Madeira. Next to it, in Calheta, lives the House of the Mudas Museum. A mandatory and time-consuming stop for lovers of contemporary art. The building itself is a piece of art . Suffice it to say that it has the signature of Paulo David, one of the most renowned national architects who, in 2012, received the Alvar Alto Medal. A sort of Oscar of world architecture.
From here, and in a land that is also known for its adventure - it has the best European trails for mountain biking and hiking - and by the yellow sand beach, the next stop may be São Vicente, where the local caves, visitable, take us to the volcanic origins of the island. In addition to the landscapes, there are many who take advantage of the Madeira Islands Trophy to take a small piece of the island home. Whether in the form of the world famous Madeira wine, of which the brands Henriques & Henriques and Justino’s Madeira are distinguished representatives, whether in a bottle of the traditional sugar cane honey of the Ribeiro Seco Factory. A delicacy that goes back to the golden age of sugar production in the archipelago. The island has a rich history and a tradition of well-being, it has been one of the first global tourist destinations in Europe. Even today, there are many who can not resist coming back. Some even choose to invest in real estate as a vacation home. Here, the services of Madeira Legacy (madeira-legacy.com) or Casa Legal (casalegal. pt) are fundamental. This is why, every year, the Madeira Golf Trophy is one of the most coveted tournaments on the national calendar.
