The portuguese Daniel da Costa Rodrigues won the 89th Men’s International Amateur Championship of Portugal in February at the Montado Hotel & Golf Resort in Palmela. A year after Vítor Lopes of Vilamoura GC, he is the second consecutive Portuguese to win this important event of the EGA (European Golf Association) calendar, rated for the amateur world ranking. The youngster of the national team and Miramar GC, only 16 years old, started the fourth and final round leading with two strokes of advantage over the English Laurie Owen and, finished with a 70, 2 under Par, for a total of 275 (-13), leaving the runner-up, Frenchman Lucas Abrial, 18, three shots away. Owen finished with the same 278 strokes (-10) as Lucas Abrial, but lost the second place tiebreaker using the best last round - 71 against the 68 of the Gallic player. Rodrigues, who on the first three days of the tournament scored 69-67-69, wins in his second participation in the tournament – in his debut in 2018, he finish 17th. Being the second best Portuguese in the amateur world ranking, in 271th this triumph will give him a significant rise in the table. Dani thus becomes the third Portuguese to win the Men’sInternational Amateur of Portugal since the tournament changed the format from match play to stroke play in 2008. The others were Pedro Figueiredo, in 2008 at the Estela Golf Club; and Gonçalo Pinto, in 2013, at Montado. Afonso Girão, the second member of the national team who made the cut to the last round, finished with 72 to stay in 36th. “I feel spectacular. I think it’s a deserved victory, for the work I’ve done. There could be no better prize - playing at home and winning at home ... It was the best that could have happened to me,” said Rodrigues at the end. “It is not a total surprise, it is only the consecration and confirmation of what is the work of a team and a structure that is very well set up behind the young athlete, who has all the talent to be able to continue to evolve,” said Miguel Franco de Sousa, President of the Portuguese Golf Federation.

Um ano depois de Vítor Lopes, do CG Vilamoura, é o segundo português consecutivo a conquistar esta importante prova do calendário da EGA (Associação Europeia de Golfe), pontuável para o ranking mundial amador. O jovem da seleção nacional e do CG Miramar, de apenas 16 anos, partiu para a quarta e última volta a comandar com duas pancadas de vantagem sobre o inglês Laurie Owen e, finalizando com o resultado de 70 pancadas, 2 abaixo do Par 72, para um total de 275 (-13), deixou o vice-campeão, o francês Lucas Abrial, de 18 anos, a três shots de distância. Laurie Owen terminou com as mesmas 278 pancadas (-10) de Lucas Abrial, mas perdeu o segundo lugar no desempate pela melhor última volta – 71 face o 68 do jogador gaulês. Daniel Rodrigues, que nos três primeiros dias de prova marcou 69-67-69, vence apenas na sua segunda participação no torneio – na estreia em 2018 ficou nos 17.ºs. Sendo o segundo melhor português no ranking mundial amador, em 271.º este triunfo vai proporcionar-lhe uma subida significativa na tabela. Dani torna-se assim o quarto português a conquistar o Internacional Amador de Portugal desde que o torneio, em 2008, mudou a modalidade de jogo do match play (por eliminatórias) para o stroke play (por pancadas). Os outros foram Pedro Figueiredo, em 2008, no Estela Golf Club; e Gonçalo Pinto, em 2013, no Montado. Afonso Girão, o segundo membro da seleção nacional que passou o cut pata a última volta, concluiu com 72 para ficar nos 36.º. “Sinto-me espetacular. Acho que é uma vitória merecida, pelo trabalho que tenho feito. Não podia haver melhor prémio – jogar em casa e ganhar em casa... Foi o melhor que me podia ter acontecido”, disse Daniel Rodrigues no final. “Não é uma surpresa total, é apenas a consagração e confirmação daquilo que é o trabalho de uma equipa e de uma estrutura que está muito bem montada por trás do jovem atleta, que tem todo o talento para poder continuar a evoluir”, resumiu Miguel Franco de Sousa, presidente da Federação Portuguesa de Golfe.
