The Englishmen Dale Whitnell and Matt Ford, and the Portuguese Tiago Cruz finished tied in front befor the final day of The Tour Championship and at the end of the decisive round Whitnell was pocketing the five thousand euros destined for the champion, out of a total of 25 thousand euros that were at stake in this final stage of the Portugal Pro Golf Tour (PPGT) of 2018/2019. The 30-year-old Englishman added his third title (the second in a row) this season on the PPGT, but his success at Troia Golf brought him mainly to something he had done ten years ago on the same stage. “This reminds me of when I lived here in Troia ten years ago, when I won the International Men’s Amateur Championship in Portugal in a very similar way. The 2 birdies on the last two holes, after having lost 1 stroke on the 16th hole were very important. His last title goes back to the previous season, January 2018. But the former twotime national champion fought hard for the 5,000 euros and five invitations to the Champion’s 2019 Challenge Tour. Cruz, the professional at the Estoril Golf Club joined the group tied for 3rd, with 208 strokes, 8 under par, being only 1 from going to the play-off. Tiago Cruz e os ingleses Dale Whitnell e Matt Ford partiram empatados na frente para o último dia do The Tour Championship e no final da volta decisiva foi Whitnell a embolsar os cinco mil euros destinados ao campeão, do total de 25 mil que estiveram em jogo nesta etapa final do Portugal Pro Golf Tour (PPGT) de 2018 / 2019. O inglês de 30 anos somou o seu terceiro título (o segundo consecutivo) nesta temporada no PPGT, mas o êxito no Troia Golf, remeteu-o sobretudo para algo que tinha feito há dez anos neste mesmo palco. “Isto traz-me memórias do que vivi aqui em Troia há dez anos, quando ganhei o Campeonato Internacional Amador Masculino de Portugal de forma muito idêntica. Os 2 birdies nos dois últimos buracos, depois de ter perdido 1 pancada no buraco 16 foram muito importantes. E depois, no play-off fiz um grande drive, seguido de um bom ferro-8 para ficar a 4,5 metros da bandeira, o George não conseguiu fazer birdie e foi suficiente para eu ganhar”, disse Dale Whitnell no final. Quem ficou esta época “em branco” foi Tiago Cruz, pois o seu último título remonta a janeiro de 2018, ou seja, referente à temporada anterior. Mas o antigo bicampeão nacional lutou bastante pelos 5 mil euros e pelos cinco convites para o Challenge Tour de 2019 do campeão. O profissional do Club de Golf do Estoril integrou o grupo dos 3.º classificados, com 208 pancadas, 8 abaixo do Par, ficando a apenas 1 de ir a play-off. Cruz assinou cartões de 70, 68 e 70, e empatou com o irlandês John-Ross Galbraith

Os dois promotores, José Correia e Gary Harris, prometeram que o PPGT irá regressar em novembro para a temporada de 2019 /2020. «Contamos apresentar muitas novidades», afirmou José Correia, igualmente presidente da PGA de Portugal. Alexandre Barroso, diretor do Troia Golf, na cerimónia de entrega de prémios, agradeceu aos jogadores a qualidade que apresentaram: «-9 é um bom resultado. Quando o Open de Portugal do European Tour foi aqui jogado o campo ganhou a fama de monstro. Obrigado por terem provado o contrário».
