Edge Golf College

It is starting in 2021. Portugal will have a university dedicated to golf. It’s called Edge Golf College and will be based at Pestana Vila Sol Premium Golf & Spa Resort in Vilamoura. In the heart of Algarve golf.

Mentors of the project, which plans to open its doors in mid-September 2021, are Neil and Fiona Connolly. The first will be responsible for the educational component of the college, and the second will manage the administrative part.

“Edge was born from a necessity to keep Europe’s Talented golfers in Europe studying (not the States), whilst they train and compete to become the best players that they can possibly be,” explains Neil Connolly, adding that the goal is to enable young people to pursue their dreams without giving up education. The choice for the Algarve was natural. “The weather in the Algarve is almost perfect for winter golf, certainly the best in Europe. Apart from that, it is a beautiful part of the world, very experienced in hosting international players and accompanied by some of the best golf courses, it’s an obvious first choice for us,” says the former British golf professional, stating that the present course will provide the necessary tools for aspiring golfers without neglecting a plan B. “Our educational offerings all have a golf slant with a view to our graduates, who are not able to make a living as a tournament player, having the necessary skill set to work within the golf industry.”

Classes start in September, in a two-year course divided into two semesters: September-December and January-April. At the end, and the result of a protocol, students attend a third year at the University of Central Lancashire, England, earning a full and recognized UK degree in one of a wide range of choices.

In Portugal, the training will be given by specialists in various areas. In addition to Neil Connolly, the Edge faculty includes: Mark Bull (Golf Biomechanics), Mark Bennett (Performance Psychology), Rodrigo Ulrich (Marketing and Brand Management) and Claudia Queirós (Personal Golf Trainer).

Tuition costs start at € 8,300 (£ 7,500) for non-resident students up to € 11,700 (£ 9,950) for resident students. Accommodation, golf and tournament packages are also available.

Os mentores do projecto, que prevê abrir portas a meio de Setembro de 2021, são Neil Connolly e Fiona Connolly. O primeiro, vai ficar responsável pela componente educativa do colégio, e a segunda vai gerir a parta administrativa. “O Edge nasceu da necessidade de manter os jogadores talentosos europeus na Europa (não nos Estados Unidos) estudando, enquanto treinam e competem para se tornarem os melhores jogadores que podem ser”, explica Neil Connolly, acrescentando que o objectivo é possibilitar que os jovens persigam os sonhos, sem abdicar da educação.

A escolha pelo Algarve foi natural. “O clima no Algarve é quase perfeito para o golfe de inverno. Claramente o melhor da Europa. Além disso, é um dos locais mais bonitos do mundo, com muita experiência em receber jogadores internacionais. Além disso, tem alguns dos melhores campos de golfe. Foi uma escolha óbvia para nós”, diz o antigo profissional de golfe britânico, adiantando que o curso presente dar as ferramentas necessárias para os aspirantes a golfistas, sem descurar um plano B.

“Todo o curso, mesmo a componente teórica, é direccionada para o golfe. Queremos que os nossos graduados que não conseguirem viver como jogadores, tenham as competências necessárias para trabalhar na indústria do golfe.” As aulas arrancam em Setembro, num curso de dois anos dividido por dois semestres: Setembro-Dezembro e Janeiro-Abril. No final, e fruto de um protocolo, os alunos frequentam um terceiro ano na University of Central Lancashire, em Inglaterra, obtendo uma graduação completa e reconhecida pela Grã-Bretanha em várias especialidades. Em Portugal, a formação será dada por especialistas em várias áreas. Além de Neil Connolly, o corpo docente conta com Mark Bull (Golf Biomechanics), Mark Bennett, (Performance Psychology), Rodrigo Ulrich (Marketing and Brand Management) e Claudia Queirós (Personal Golf Trainer). Os custos da formação começam nos 8.300 euros (7.500 libras) para alunos externos até aos 11.700 euros (9.950 libras) para os estudantes residentes. Existe ainda opções para habitação e pack de torneios.
